Los carbohidratos son una fuente energética de gran utilidad para el deportista. Tomar carbohidratos durante la práctica de actividades de larga duración como algunas modalidades de Ciclismo, Triatlón y Trail o interválicos de alta intensidad como futbol, rugby, atletismo, contribuyen a mantener un nivel de glucemia optimo y evitar un descenso en los depósitos de glucógeno. Tanto en deportes de resistencia como en deportes explosivos, interválicos y de fuerza, tomar carbohidratos nada más finalizar el ejercicio, contribuye a la reposición de los depósitos de glucógeno. Hay distintos formatos: solos sin mezcla, mezclados con proteínas, con aminoácidos, con sales minerales.
