Rehydration should start as soon as the physical exercise is over. The main aim is to immediately restore the cardiovascular, muscular and metabolic physiological responses by correcting the loss of fluid and solutes accumulated during the course of the exercise. It is recommended to take in at least 150% of the weight loss in the first six hours after exercise to replace the fluid lost either through sweat or urine. This leads to recovering water balance.
According to recommendations by the European Scientific Committee on Food and the Spanish Federation of Sports Medicine, the osmolality of specific drinks for hydro-electrolyte replacement should offer between 200 and 300 mOsm/kg of water, as well as providing between 20-50 mmol/l of sodium (460-1150mg/l)
